The best and the worst are exposed in our Fifth Annual Awards.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Satoru Iwata

The man was born a game developer. Satoru Iwata has been creating games from his high school years up until he was promoted to being Nintendo's fourth president since it was founded in 1889. Iwata started working part-time at the struggling Nintendo developer HAL Laboratory where in 1982 he finally joined the team full-time. During his tenure at HAL, he was responsible for producing such games as Balloon Fight, Earthbound, and the highly successful Kirby games. In 1993 he was made president of HAL and continued freelancing for NCL on various titles. Then president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, took notice of Iwata's dedication to creating excellent games for Nintendo and in 2000 moved Iwata over to NCL and made him head of their Corporate Planning Division. Due to his efforts and successes, in August 2002 Yamauchi publicly named Iwata president. Since then, Iwata has been instrumental in the creation and success of the Nintendo DS and with the Revolution is moving Nintendo (and possibly the world of video gaming) into a bold new direction by giving gamers a new way to interact with games.
