The New E3

by Michael Cole - August 3, 2006, 8:26 pm EDT

The PGC staff discusses the ESA's recent announcements, as well as Ubisoft's strong support for Wii.

[Mike C.] What about that Ubisoft Press Release, guys?

[Mike G.] If we aren't done yet, I curious as to what you all think about this whole PAX is the new e3 press that has

been going around

[Bloodworth] I was really surprised

[Evan] Firking sweet, good news, but Red Steel had better not suck.

[Steven] Ubi is supporting the Wii as much as Nintendo is

[Zosha] I'm wondering what the Prince of Persia game is

[Bloodworth] Far Cry especially

[Zosha] remake of Sands of Time, supposedly

[Mike C.] I think this clearly demonstrates you cheaply a Wii game can be made

[Bloodworth] but really, the biggest deal isn't that the games are coming

[Bloodworth] it's that they're LAUNCH

[Steven] I would think Prince of Persia is legit, it won't be coming out at launch day

[Steven] Seven games on LAUNCH DAY

[Bloodworth] that's pretty impressive

[Mike C.] Why would they remake a game so soon?

[Evan] this makes the buying decisions that much harder - I already want Rayman, Wii Sports, Zelda, Metroid, etc etc

[Zosha] Bloodworth, the cynic in me says they're retooled Xbox ports :P

[Mike C.] Not that other companies haven't, mind you

[Mike G.] Are we sure this isn't a launch 'window' release?

[Bloodworth] window is still by Christmas

[Mike G.] true

[Mike C.] Put a sock in it Dragona, I don't want to hear your annoying Wii-is-bad comments

[Mike G.] i'm just a bit skeptical that we are gonna see these on the shelf the same day

[Zosha] I didn't say it was bad

[Zosha] :P

[Zosha] i said its underpowered :P

[Stan] i agree, Pale

[Steven] I'm the most surprised at Far Cry

[Bloodworth] a little harsh TYP

[Mike C.] Besides, they already had a multiplatform engine for that game

[Mike C.] So it wouldn't be an Xbox port

[Aaron] Pale, I think some of the other expos/cons might try to be "the new E3" but their success as such will of

course depend on publisher support... which is the whole reason E3 is where it is now. However, I have noticed some

publishers are more frequently showing up at anime/comic cons lately...

[Zosha] Oh for god's sake TYP, they can easily take the goddamned Xbox assets

[Zosha] regardless of enging

[Zosha] jeez

[Bloodworth] lol MB was typing five minutes ago and just finished

[Mike G.] MB Nintendo and MS are both on board for PAX this year and they are expecting 15,000 attendees.

[Mike G.] I went last year and Nintendo had a really cool booth. The rest of the expo room was kind of lacking though

[Bloodworth] Robert Khoo is a god

[Steven] Yeah, they would start with what they had on the Xbox and bump it up, but still make the new game around

the controller

[Evan] Hell, I should've gotten a ticket, it's only like 10 hours away...

[Aaron] It will probably depend on the success of the new E3

[Mike G.] If e3 doesn't happen for me next year, I plan on using that plane ticket money for another PAX trip

[Steven] Oregon: Where the only thing worth doing is driving to another state!

[Mike G.] i hope e3 still works out though

[Mike C.] I think we need more details. It could be just dandy, but the ESA needs to be smart about how it

replaces the convention center

[Evan] Why don't you come up North and say that to my pet bear, Windy

[Bloodworth] I think location is important, but I also think Nintendo will have everything we need

[Aaron] I suppose a lot of the smaller devs might want to get together to do something regardless of ESA, but

they'd need some sort of organizing force...

[Mike C.] This is very true--smaller developers could really be shafted by the format

[Steven] Evan: http://www.kameda-lab.org/private/flags/img/california.jpg

[Mike G.] In my most optimistic mind, Nintendo would get a larger conference/ball room in a hotel, invite all the third

parties there, and it would make our lives a ton easier

(Steven gives Evan the middle finger!)

[Mike C.] I mean, if they can't get space in the same hotels as the big boys, who will visit them?

[Mike G.] so we wouldn't have to travel at all

[Aaron] That's where I see possibly GDC filling the gap, but I suppose you'd have a better idea about that TYP

[Mike C.] Yeah, but I know other site members had a hard enough time when publishers were in the same

building

[Mike C.] *press from other sites

[Mike C.] Especially the multiplatform ones

[Mike C.] GDC will be in the larger San Fran CC again next year, so there is potential for more action

[Mike C.] ...well, I guess that about wraps this up. Any final words?

[Mike C.] OK then, That's it. Thanks for participating, guys!

[Steven] THANKS
