Roses are red, violets are blue, Dig Dug inflates enemies, and today gets his due.
Better dig deep, boy! No, not in your wallet. Into the ground! The NES version of Dig Dug is available on the 3DS Virtual Console today (although, it never did get released in North America on the NES, but who worries over such silly details). If dropping rocks on fools' heads isn't your thing, why don't you do something more peaceful up here above the crust with Wii Street U, a free application for your Wii U that harnesses the power of Google Maps to bring you closer to the world around you. Speaking of the world, if you want to go back around to violence, Worlds Heroes 2 Jet is up for purchase on the Wii Virtual Console. If it's bird-on-bird violence you want, check out DSiWare's Moke Moke. Until next week, stay classy, readers.

Not one to leave well enough alone, Taizo Hori (aka Dig Dug, aka The Notorious D.I.G.) has made it his life's mission to rid the world of the enemies that lie below. Sure, they haven't exactly posed any threat, and all they eat is dirt, but they're down there and that bothers Hori. So, in this 1982 arcade action-puzzler from Namco, Dig Dug dons his protective gear and inflates those "baddies" to death. Or he drops a rock on them. Whatever works. A lot of our 8-bit heroes were jerks, and we just need to live with that.
Wii Virtual Console:
World Heroes 2 Jet - 900 Points
The Wii's Virtual Console is quickly becoming that weird arcade that carries every single fighting game available, without a care for if the machines are going to get any action with Street Fighter II right over there. Owners must be rich or something. Anyways, World Heroes 2 is a fighter that dates back to 1994, and brings along the cast of its predecessor, as well as its two modes (the first being a basic, health bar-based fighter, the other being a tug of war called Death Match). New to Jet are three additional characters, revised move sets for the returning characters, and a faster sense of motion (hence the Jet portion of the title). Also in tow are two new modes, Entry to the Tournament (in which the player faces off against groups of enemies), and The Forging of Warriors (in which you choose your character and three opponents).

Face off against three other bird-ish... things in what the developer bills as a Battle Royale Action title. Fly yourself around the screen, grabbing whatever jewels your claws can manage, and whip them over to the treasure chest. But watch out! Other bird-esque dudes want your loot too! Play against the computer or three of your friends in local multiplayer.
