Canadian Cube Showing!

by Zosha Arushan - November 1, 2001, 12:51 am EST

Take a look at what Canadians are getting instead of CubeClubs.

Since I was in Toronto on business the past weekend, I decided to make a detour to the neighboring city of Newmarket, about an hour and a half drive's away. So I ended up in the Upper Canada Mall, thanks to my |337 map reading |<1||Z.

Out by the Toys 'R' Us wing there was a little area dedicated to the GameCube. Four GC kiosks surrounded a large inflated Cube. Luigi's Mansion were set up on three of them, with WaveRace on one of the outside stations, and inside TEH GIANT C00B another GC was hooked up to a nice-sized TV and was running a 4 player game of WR:BS.

The Controller was as soft and ergonomic as I remembered, but now had an added kick, as the analog sticks seemed to have an even better grip -- especially on the C-Stick. I went and played a bit of Luigi for a while and marveled over how wonderful the game looked and played. There was so much personality to the characters and backgrounds. Not to mention the fun of sucking up ghosts. (I just noticed that if you play the ghost like a fishing line, you reel/suck them in faster!)

This controller is your new love.

Anyway, after a bit of that I approached the Nintendo of Canada reps and introduced myself and PGC. Surprisingly, they hadn't heard of the site, but they promise to read from now on. After commenting on which games they were excited about for launch (Rogue Leader, of course,) I asked them their feelings on how Canada was only allocated 70 000 units for North American launch. They responded that it was probably because their country had a smaller population to the US, at a ratio of about 1 : 10. At that point someone called my name and I turned to see my colleague and fellow N-sider staffer, Jason Nuyens (aka General Tao). Another fine fellow named Toby Goodman showed up and took the pictures that are accompanying this report. He and his brother Matt are avid PGC fans and couldn't wait to test out the GC.

So we talked, traded rumours and scored free shit. Ah yes.... the joys of being a journalist. Heheheh. The NOC reps were handing out little promotional cards along with the demo discs, GC stickers and a key necklace.

I also managed to snag a very |337 baseball cap, but unfortunately, it wouldn't scan well, so tough luck for you all. All in all it was an enjoyable day and makes me pine for a GC console for myself even more.
