Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting Sega's Phantasy Star Online, and the promise of cross-platform play. But Sony has other ideas ...

In the latest issue of Next-Gen Magazine, they have a report about Sony's online plans.

Attributed to the ever-present "sources", Sony is planning on making their online network closed, meaning that any game servers would need be run behind Sony's servers, or with Sony's blessing.

This means that it is highly unlikely that a cross-platform version of Madden or Phantasy Star Online, while technically capable of talking to other versions, would ever be ALLOWED to talk to machines outside the Sony network.

There is also word that Sony may limit which ISP's can connect to the network, hence the deal with AOL. However, there is no word out of Japan, where the broadband adapter is available, that this is the case. Things may change in the future on this point, however.

More as this story develops.
