PGC E3 Video Update

by Max Lake - August 2, 2001, 1:14 am EDT

We are almost done editing the video & moving to production. Yay! So what’s next? What are some of the highlights of video? How much longer until it is done? The answers are here.

Since a long time before E3 2001 took place, we were planning and pimping our E3 video. Well, it’s been a long and crazy road since then. However, the next two days should see the E3 video getting out of my hair, and into production. I am very happy to be able to say this!

Rob Avery and I have been working really hard to put this together. A couple weeks ago, he was over 50% complete, though still had a bit to go. With some help from my family, I was able to purchase a firewire hard drive that has accelerated things tremendously. Now, we are almost done with the video. Meanwhile, Mike is working on putting a majority of the footage on the CD set.

What is interesting (and almost unintentional) is that the videos & CDs will each have a good deal of exclusive content, although both formats will have a majority of the same material. The CD set will have a different camera angle for one of the keynotes for example, while the video will have a “special edition” (re: more edited) version of the Nintendo pre-show. Overall, the video will have more stuff!

We have gotten a LOT of heck for taking so long from anxious readers. Reviewing all of our footage however, it will be worth the wait. Other publications (print and online) are still milking the goods from E3, and the video has it all in one neat little package. What’s more, it is also very much a documentary of PGC meeting GameCube (a system we’ve devoted over two years to covering already) and has us reporting & commenting on all the news as it happens. It’s pretty amazing to watch, especially seeing it all come together. It’s a wonderful adventure through E3 with a focus on Nintendo.

Although we have lots of game footage (most of it Nintendo, but some other stuff too) what makes the PGC E3 video special is the fact it has a lot of exclusive stuff. Last week, I was working on editing our Denis Dyack interview—good golly, there is SO much stuff in there! Denis talked with us for over an hour. Acclaim’s David Dienstbier was also terribly generous with his time & PGC’s interview contains info about Turok Evolution (& the Turok series) that I have yet to see anywhere else. We also have a few more interviews too, with the likes of Sega’s Yuji Naka & Yoshihiro Nagoshi, NOA’s Beth Llewelyn… There’s even a nice long interview (by Newsweek) with somebody known as Shigeru Miyamoto.

We didn’t realize it at the time, but we got insane amounts of footage of what was to be the last E3 Peter Main (AKA PETERMAINCO by the Planet geeks) would represent Nintendo before his retirement. It’s also the first E3 where Sega announced its retirement from the console business and concentrate on software—a change that will have significant impact on the next generation of consoles. We have the most footage anywhere of Sega’s Unleashed event & I am happy that Sega will play a big part in the video.

The game footage is plentiful. Although some of it contains scan lines (like, unfortunately, when PGC plays 4 player Wave Race & Smash Bros Melee) we have oodles and oodles of all of the GameCube games shown. We even have some direct feed, which is phenomenal. In relaxed moments, I find myself watching some of the footage over and over. (“It looks that good?!?”) The direct feed is like a sneak peek of what GameCube games will look like on your TV. Very cool.

The best part of the video is that it has PGC flavor all over it. Billy talks about feeding Pikmin to Louie; you can actually hear Rick Powers finally accepting (& loving!) the GameCube logo; Younger Plumber proving he’s crazier than all of us by doing Luigi imitations as I attempt to negotiate his underage, plumber-loving carcass into E3… If nothing else, this video is a documentary of PGC working hard, playing hard and coming together at the dawn of the Nintendo revolution.

Working with our friends at GamingEdge and Nintendo Gamer magazine, we’ve pulled off something really fun & informative. Thankfully, I’m nearly done with it and I can’t wait for all of you to see it!

I know we’ve tried many peoples’ patience in getting this together. I have been stressed and stretched to my limits, though am VERY pleased what is shaping up to be the final product. We aren’t getting rich off this video; we’re just trying to cover server costs to keep ourselves afloat. This video is our first attempt at this kind of project, so it has taken longer than we would have liked. Now that I’m almost done with it, I gotta say I think we did a good job all things considered.

As soon as the video is out of my hands, Billy only needs to OK the master. Once this happens, we will open orders up to other forms of payment and begin preparing for shipping. We are hoping folks will have their videos just before SpaceWorld, so they will be able to see E3 in all its glory just as the next part of the story is unfolding.

Thanks to those who have pre-ordered and waited patiently! Although we did not get very many E3 goodies, we will try to hook people (at least the remaining pre-orders) up with a little “something something” –more like, whatever we can find.

I’ve got to get some sleep so I’ll be rested to tackle the last couple days of getting this together!

We’ll have more information on full orders soon. Thanks to everyone who is supporting PGC by purchasing our E3 video!
