Star Fox Adventures

by Joe Fletcher - August 23, 2001, 3:09 pm EDT

After playing the game at E3, Joe plays the game again to check out the changes.

At E3, Star Fox Adventures seemed to play a lot like Zelda. While still true for at least the forest stage of the game, there's a new level to the game, and it's impressive. Star Fox 64, eat your heart out.

The new space level is an example of what we'll see on the Arwing stages of the game. The controls handle a lot like the 64 version, but the similarities end there. The graphics are absolutely incredible, with multiple lighting and flare effects at almost all times, and tons of action. Definitely something to look forward to, but there hasn't been enough gameplay yet to really take a huge look.

As far the old part of the game, the forest level hasn't changed too much, but the graphics themselves are majorly cleaned up. The level of polish to the game seems to have been improved big time. Fox has full expressions now, giving him a much better sense of character. The animations have been improved big time, making everything move much more realistically and fluidly than before. Even with all the graphical improvements, the frame rate hasn't suffered a single bit. It's still 60 FPS heaven. The game was incredible at E3, now it's even moreso.

The other part of the game that was playable is the T-Rex attack. Way back when this was still Dinosaur Planet at E3 a year ago, there was a level where you were attacked by a huge T-Rex, and basically the only recourse was to run like heck. The premise is still the same, but it's all done in full 60 FPS, graphical excellence glory. The feeling of the whole stage gives off the right impression of panic as you run and the T-Rex just crashes after you, destroying everything in its path.

The game definitely looks better than the E3 version, and that's saying a lot. It's not even done yet, and it can only get better from here.
