GB Advance Roll Cage

by Rick Powers - June 15, 2001, 6:13 pm EDT

Tune in to the new episode of Planet GameCube, when "Rick-man" says "sh*t" for the very first time ... UNEDITED!

I don't know what to say. There's rarely an accessory or piece of hardware that I can't find at least SOME redeeming value in. I mean, everything has a purpose. Except this.

The Mad Catz "Roll Cage" for Game Boy Advance is an unadulterated piece of shit.

Let me give you a mental picture of this "product" (and I use that term loosely), since there is no way anyone will convince me to, in good conscience, post a screenshot. The Roll Cage is a rubbery piece of, um ... rubber, that wraps around the middle of your GBA vertically. On either side of the screen are two metal bars that stand out from the screen about half an inch. The idea is that if you drop your GBA, the screen never touches the ground, protecting your screen. Brilliant idea, right?! Not so fast ...

The problem with the Roll Cage lies entirely in the execution. For an accessory that's supposed to protect the screen while playing with it, it needs to be as unobtrusive as possible. The Roll Cage completely fails in this regard ... the bars are constantly in the way, and the cut out around the EXT. port is too small to support a light source like the Worm Light Plus (though I'm sure Mad Catz lights work).

More importantly, the thing just looks, for lack of a better word ... gay. Super gay. Liberace gay. Rock Hudson gay. It is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen since Roseanne (Barr, Arnold, whatever) in spandex.

Then there's the fact that the only way the Roll Cage works is if you drop the Roll Cage on the protected areas (i.e. the back or the screen). The shoulder buttons and both sides are completely exposed, and if you drop it on one of those corners, you're still going to damage the unit. Yeah, the screen may survive, but break a shoulder button and you'll still be pissed. And if you drop it in gravel, the little metal bars aren't going to keep your screen from getting scratched.

It's probably the most worthless peripheral I have ever used, and I hope Mad Catz puts more thought into any other protective accessories that they might come up with in the future. This thing is garbage.
